Video Monitors And Intercoms Provide Added Home Security

For many people, home alarm systems and locked doors are the extent of their home security plan. While these are very important precautions, there are a variety of other steps in addition to these that you should take to protect your home. Two of these ways are with video monitors and intercoms. These can be used individually or can be combined for extra protection.

Video monitors and intercoms are beneficial, both separately and combined, for many different reasons, but both ensure that you do not unknowingly open the door for a potential intruder.

Video Monitors:

-    Video monitors are wireless with a camera installed on the outside of your house, either on the door or on the outside wall, and a base monitoring system inside. This means no messy wires or cables.

Intercoms:

-    An intercom can be used for the same reasons as a video monitor. An intercom is also wireless and has two parts: an intercom inside and outside, both with a speaker and microphone.

-    When your doorbell rings, rather than opening it without knowing who it is, talk to the person using your indoor intercom. This will be either a phone or a system where you push a button to speak. If the person confirms it is someone you know, you can answer the door for them. If you do not know them, you do not have to open the door.

Benefits for both houses and apartment buildings:

-    If you live in a house and your doorbell rings and the visitor is a potential intruder, viewing them on a video screen from the safety of your home is much safer than peering through a window which they will probably be able to see you through.

-    If you live in an apartment unit that does not face the front door, this is the only sure way to see or talk to someone before letting them into your building. It is common for people looking to cause harm to ring the bell of multiple units outside the building just to see who will let them in. A monitor or intercom can increase the home security level of the whole building.

Combined:

-    When video monitors and intercoms are combined, they are an even more beneficial home security precaution. When your doorbell rings, you can first see who is at the door, and if it is someone you know or you think you need to open the door for, you can speak with them on the intercom before letting them in. This double protection will ensure you only open the door for harmless people.
