Logic and Pro Tools - The differences
If audio editing is your hobby or career this article will point out some of the main differences between two popular programs used for audio editing, Logic & Pro Tools.
Logic Pro is easy to use, no matter what your experience in the industry of audio editing, Logic is a pro-quality application which is easy to understand, it's depth of design keeps pros and amateurs within the music industry satisfied. Unlike Pro Tools, no special hardware is needed to run Logic. Pro-Tools is a program that once you learn how to use Pro Tools you then have the skills to work in many different audio environments. An advantage of using Pro Tools is that you can record and edit an audio session on a lower end system and can still mix and edit your session on a higher end systems which are often found in T.V or Radio stations.
The difference between the two programs is that Pro Tools is available for both Mac and Windows whereas Logic is only available for mac based systems. ProTools suffers a downfall at the lack of built in instruments and plug ins whereas on the other hand, Logic has always maintained a high quality of content included.
How much is each program and are they worth it?
Logic studio which includes the Logic Pro 9 software is available on the Apple website for around £417, with Logic all you need to do is install your software, hook it up with your hardware and away you go, you are then ready to start your audio editing. Whereas ProTools takes a little longer as there are a number of steps you have to undergo before you are up and ready. The latest version, ProTools 9 is available online for approximately £448 which works out more expensive than the Logic software. To use the latest versions of ProTools you must have an approved audio interface before you can even start to enjoy using the software. It may then require you to re-install your software if you are upgrading from a lower version, which can be time-consuming. In my opinion Logic comes across as a better program to use in this respect but Pro Tools seems to be used more in the industry so if it is for your career that you are choosing this software, this is the program I would recommend.
Both programs are effective and capable of producing high-quality music. ProTools is best for studio recording whereas Logic is used if you are doing a a lot of sequencing. The choice of which program will change with different people's preferences. I hope this insight has helped with anyone who is interested in audio editing, whether an amateur or pro.

Steve –
Thanks for the clarification on the Gaussian filter!
Although IPCC AR4 WGI Chapter 6 generally uses a Gaussian filter, it's curious that Mann (2004) instead uses the relatively arcane Butterworth filter. This is an electronic filter that has a very flat passband and a monotonic (albeit slow) stopband rolloff. With infinite order, it becomes an ideal “brickwall” lowpass filter, but since all realizeable circuits have some resistances that makes them non-ideal, electrial engineers have to settle for imperfect filters like the Butterworth. The likewise imperfect Chebyschev filter is generally preferred, since it has faster rolloff at the expense of some passband ripple. (See Wikipedia)
However, computer filtering of data is not subject to the same contraints as electrical engineering, and so one could just as well use the ideal filter, which in continuous time is the cardinal sine function sinc(x) = sin(x)/x, appropriately scaled and normalized. In unbounded discrete time there is presumably a discrete version of this. In bounded discrete time, one could simply truncate the weights at the boundaries and renormalize, reflect the data at the boundaries until the weights are imperceptible, or (more ambitiously) recompute optimal weights that kill, in expectation, an equally spaced set [...]
I believe that the order theory is accurate… It basically states that order influences personality…
