I'm a big fan of Vegas' kid brother – Vegas Movie Studio. It's got all the bells and whistles you'll need and not too many that you won't. To be honest, it's not the easiest editor to start with (Pinnacle Studio and AVS are both easier) but give it an hour or so and you'll be able to to do stuff that's difficult to impossible in the others. I understand what you mean by "home video editing", but you'll be surprised by how fine the margin is between good and merely watchable!
