How can I make a lamp dimmer out of a wall dimmer switch?
I'm interested in making a removable device that can I can plug a lamp into that will dim the light coming from it. I bought a second hand dimmer switch off the internet and am not sure how to wire it. There is a single wire coming from the switch and what looks like 5 screws that wires can go into. from top to bottom they read as follows:
- N
- ONE WAY
- COMMON
- TWO WAY
- (symbol of three horizontal lines and one vertical one intersecting it)

If anyone could offer some advice I'd be most grateful
Personally I don't think this is something you should tackle yourself. I would have to be there to figure it out and I am not positive it can be done. The fixture you have is for a wall mount for an overhead light etc.
There are inline dimmer switches for lamps that are made for this exact application. They are easy to wire and have easy to follow directions included.

Wall Sconce Lighting For Maximum Effect
Wall sconces are for aesthetically minded people who like to give the rooms and hallways a touch of the rustic look. But generally, the purpose of wall scones is to provide lighting for hallways, the lobby and other rooms, while fixed to the walls - as opposed to other lights suspended from the ceiling.
If your home interior has got wonderful architecture, then my bet is that you will want to accentuate it as much as possible so that your guests do not miss it. Another thing is that if you have excellent paintings on the walls of your sitting room, you want the guests' attention to be drawn to them and therefore the smart thing is to buy wall sconces and fix them right there next to the painting.
Sometimes there might be slight defects with the architecture, the walls and the paint. You do not want your guests to see that and therefore you would just have to move the sconce away from that point. Light draws attention and therefore when you place your sconce away from the defective area it will downplay the bad side of your architecture.
There are many types of wall sconce and the choice will be yours. For older stone houses, the most compatible variety of wall mounted sconces is made of bronze. This will give your hallways the kind of rustic look that matches so well with the interior decor of Victorian houses.
If you are really artistic and still think that the Victorian era should have remained, then what you need is a candelabra. Just cast a dim candle glow all along your hallway, and go down memory lane, remembering the good old times. The candelabra can be of bronze, wrought iron, even silver if you can find it.
Today, you do not have to go for that Tudor wall sconce from ancient England if you have no love for anything ancient. All you have to do is to locate a unique wall sconce that is a combination of the ancient and the modern. These are many, as manufacturers have realized that there is still a lot of love for the wall hung sconce that is a tad more modern.
If you want to use your wall sconces for the purpose of lighting only, then perhaps you should consider painting your walls white, because white will reflect the light all over, brightly. Note that wall mounted sconce lights are dimmer in quality compared to other types of lighting. The best thing yet is that wall sconces are not a domain of the interior of the home only, but they can be used for outside wall lighting where they cast a dim light that would be good for your garden at night. Just think lighting, because that is what the wall sconce is all about.
