I've never hired an interior decorator but would like to. Advice?

I really don't know what to expect. Is it like on the show "Designer's Challenge" where I could interview each one, have them submit design boards and choose the best one, or is that just in tv land? Should I try to find a designer whose favorite style is the same as mine (transitional) or should I just find someone who has talent and know that they can work with whatever design they're given even if it's not their personal favorite?

All of that depends on how much you're willing to pay out, how professional you want the service, and the exact type of outcome you're looking for.
Whether you hire a professional, or an acquaintance, or a friend or relative, be sure that you KNOW that they will be versatile, that they will LISTEN to you and understand what you want/like, and that they don't get "pushy" with their unique style and make you feel like you "have" to do it a certain way.
You do need to trust the one you choose, though, completely, because sometimes they spring "strange" ideas on you that might sound perposterous, but really they would be beautiful when complete.

You can go to a Design Center in any state and speak with the manager there and then they can assign an interior decorator to you. Or, you can go to the yellow pages and call all the interior designers that you want and then get bids from them and see what kind of work they have done.

Always ask for a portfolio and check out references and maybe even give them a test room or project just to see how they do (not permanent, just practice). Make sure you have an agreement signed that if they end up hashing the whole project you'll be covered for it completely.

You can get the cheapest help through salespersons at furniture stores, hardware stores that have home decorating areas, paint and flooring stores, and especially, at decorating stores. Don't just trust anyone, of course, but don't turn your nose up at someone who may appear to not know anything because you could end up being very pleased with what they could do for you.
